A ranking of the best fifty beers in the world: the task may appear impossible. After all, how does anyone properly compare a saison to a port, or an IPA to an imperial stout? Determining the fifty best beers is certainly an ambitious project, but part of what actually does make it possible is its immediacy: our list is very much of the moment in 2014.
The World's 50 Best Beers (Slideshow)
Three years ago, a lot more Imperial IPAs would have been present, and there would have been fewer saisons. This list is a reflection not only of the best beers being crafted internationally, but also of changing tastes in the market — such as the emergence of Belgian-styles being made outside of Belgium. A few of the incredibly hoppy IPAs; extremely popular in the past few years, unsurprisingly made the list while the current trend of sour beers is represented as well. Although it’s not represented in our top-fifty, keep an eye out for the newly emerging love of session beers — as brewers attempt to get the most flavor possible out of the ingredients without all the alcohol.
Along with the Belgians, there is a strong American presence. What could make so many beer experts inclined to rank this many American brews in a list of the top 50 beers made all around the world? The American craft brewing scene has not only blown up, but has become truly respectable in its own right. Not too terribly long ago, critics might have said there was no distinct American style beer. Today, America is replicating and improving upon traditional styles, as well as innovating and adding new things to the market.
To determine our top fifty, we went straight to a group of specialists and professionals. We asked our panelist of beer experts to submit five of their favorite beers made anywhere in the world, then we compiled the most popular results of that list with some additional international winners for a list of one hundred stellar international beers — all of which would have been at home in the final fifty. The panelists were then invited to vote on their favorites among these hundred, which we then distilled down to a final fifty brews based on popularity within the panel, while taking into account international accolades.[slideshow:
Clearly, this is an imperfect system. With a list of only 50 beers, there are going to be some truly excellent brews that get overlooked — from Fuller’s London Porter to Bell’s Oberon; Founders Red Rye PA to Stillwater Farmhouse Ale, oh, not to mention Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout, or Hitachino Nest White Ale, or — you get the point. We could go on and on about our adoration of beers that didn’t make the cut, but we’re absolutely enamored with the final fifty on our list. Cheers!

- 2 large eggs
- 1 bottle light- or medium-bodied lager (12 ounces), cold
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled)
- Coarse salt
- 5 cups vegetable oil
- 2 1/2 to 3 pounds shrimp, firm fish fillets (such as cod), or desired vegetables (such as onions or pepperoncini), cut into pieces if necessary
- 2 cups buttermilk (if using onions)
In a medium bowl, whisk eggs until smooth, then whisk in beer. Add 1 1/2 cups flour and 1 1/2 teaspoons salt and whisk until combined. Place 1 cup flour in a shallow bowl. Place a wire rack on top of a rimmed baking sheet set near stove.
In a wide 6-quart pot fitted with a deep-fat or candy thermometer, heat oil to 375 degrees over medium. (The oil should bubble rapidly when a pinch of flour is added.) Working in small batches, lightly coat food in flour, then dip in batter, gently shaking off excess. Fry, turning halfway through, until browned and crisp, about 5 minutes per batch (adjust heat to maintain 375 degrees). With a slotted spoon, transfer food to rack to drain and discard any browned bits of batter. Season immediately with salt. Keep warm in a 200-degree oven.
Springdale Kölsch Money
Beer enthusiasts outside the Boston area might hear the name “Springdale” and ask, “Who?” The best answer to that question is “Jack’s Abby,” and then it all starts to make sense—the exactitude, the balance, the authentic approach. Jack Hendler and his team have been nailing classic lager styles for a decade now, and we can’t think of any reason why playing around with different yeasts would throw them off their game—though it’s worth mentioning that their Post Shift Pilsner and Copper Legend Octoberfest were highly competitive for this spot, and arguably just as deserving.
In the end, it was this delicately brewed Kölsch-style ale that shone brightest in our tastings. It presents as brilliantly clear, with properly sturdy foam. Clean, light, honey-bread malt plays with peardrop in the nose, light sweetness passing through soft bitterness on the palate—stepping just a pinky toe over the line for a subtle addictive quality—leading to a dryish, totally clean finish.
We don’t find the word “crisp” especially helpful—it’s too often applied to thin, characterless beers—but we know what people mean when they say it, and this beer has a snap to it, then it’s done, and then you want more. It’s a model of precision made by brewers who know a thing or two about it.

The 20 Best American Pale Ales
If there’s one beer that America does better than anyone in the world, it’s the pale ale. Since the first batches in the late 1970s from Anchor and New Albion, this highly-hopped, but easy drinking brew has become the biggest crowd pleaser in the craft world. Though the American pale ale is hoppy compared to its subtle British forefathers, as IPAs swept the country in the 2000s, brewers pushed ever more hoppy, bitter, and boozy beers — leaving the more balanced pale ale behind. Thankfully, discerning drinkers are returning from the headier beers to the more drinkable, with the pale ale leading the way.
To help us wade through this resurgent style, we consulted the author of Designing Great Beer and founder of the Cicerone program, Ray Daniels. The veteran beer judge recommended keeping our picks below six-percent alcohol to keep a clear line between pale ales and IPAs. Here are our 20 favorite picks — beers you should keep well stocked throughout summer and beyond.

Augustiner Helles, Augustiner-Bräu
Beer in Bavaria is sacred. We’ve all heard of Oktoberfest and the Reinheitsgebot – we know the Bavarians take beer seriously. Intricate brewing practices and quality ingredients are used in brewing the classic styles of Bavaria. Each brewmaster seeks stylistic perfection. Well, perfection exists and it comes in the form of Augustiner Helles.
Pale gold with a frothy, tightly bound egg-white head, Augustiner is clear and feverishly carbonated. On the nose, sweet malt is accentuated by a subtle Noble hop character. Flavor-wise, this Helles brings to mind a crackery bread crust with a lightly sweet finish. Simply put, one of our favorite lagers available.
The 20 Essential Fruit Beers Any Serious Beer Drinker Should Know
These subtle and complex brews will challenge any preconceived notions you might have about this misunderstood category.
Some drinkers hear the term 𠇏ruit beer” and assume the brew in question will be saccharine, one-note, and palette-fatiguing after a sip or two. And in some cases, those assumptions are accurate. But fruit beers can also be as subtle, layered, and structured as fine wines (which, you’ll recall, are essentially just grape juice).
𠇏ruit beer is basically beer made with fruit, so it’s a pretty broad category,” says Averie Swanson, head brewer at Austin, Texas-based Jester King Brewery. She says fruit incorporation has long been a part of Belgian beer-making. And as Belgian sours have lately risen in popularity in the U.S., so have fruit beers. (You’ll see that plenty of sours make this list.)
Swanson says there are different ways to go about adding fruit to beer. “You can take a mature beer and then add fruit as a second source of fermentable sugar,” she says. She practices this “re-fermentation” at Jester King, and says the second round of fermentation with fruit can impart added flavor or sweetness to a beer, but also additional texture and acidity.
While Jester King uses only whole fruit, other brewers may choose to add fruit juice (or fruit concentrate, or even artificial fruit flavoring) during various phases of the brewing process—to good or poor effect. “The American school [of brewing] is no holds barred, so there’s a lot of variety,” Swanson says.
If you’ve never tried fruit beers and you don’t know where to start, this list has you covered. Ditto if you’ve dabbled with fruit beers but didn’t like what you tasted. Don’t give up. Each of the brews named here has helped shift the perception of fruit beer among American craft fans, and each is an essential stop on your fruit beer voyage of discovery.
There Are Way Too Many IPAs. Here Are the 12 Best.
There's one thing that "best IPA" lists too often do not consider: actually being able to find and enjoy the beers.
Look, not everyone has the ways or means to travel to a remote corner of Vermont to visit the hallowed grounds of The Alchemist or Hill Farmstead. Not everyone has the time or energy to wait in a serpentine beer-release line at Tired Hands or Bissell Brothers. Not every beer drinker has to be a beer fanatic.
And it is in this more measured approach to beer drinking that we created our list of the 12 best IPA beers.
It's not that we don't enjoy esoteric beers from small-town nano-breweries&mdashit's just that it's hard to recommend them to a fellow beer drinker who is just looking to branch out a little. Nothing is more frustrating, we know, then hearing about a great beer and then realizing that the only way you could ever drink it is by having to travel and/or wait for a taste.
So, on this list you will not find Pliny the Elder, or any of its gotta-hunt-for-it ilk. You will also not find any session IPAs, fruited IPAs, or otherwise non-traditional IPAs, except for hazy IPAs, which have come to redefine the style.
What you will find is a list of dependably delicious IPAs that deliver on hops and are to be trusted in flavor no matter what the year (as long as you drink them fresh, of course).
Named after the Two Hearted River in Michigan, the state where Bell's is based, this strong and sturdy IPA is a classic. Centennial hops deliver equal doses of citrusy tang and piney punch, while an undercurrent of malt lends balance.
Hoppy beers are like ska bands: The worse the pun in their name, the harder they are to enjoy. Which is why a beer named "IPA" is perfect for this Stone offering. It's straightforward. But for a beer that's been around since 1997, that doesn't mean boring. You'll taste some tropical fruits, some peppery notes, and even some grapefruit in here, if you're paying close attentino.
At 7% ABV, it's up to you whether or not you want to actually have one for lunch. Regardless, it's gentle sweetness and palate-popping hops make it an excellent food beer, especially with seafood, grilled vegetables, or anything spicy.
The inclusion of Dogfish Head's 60 Minute IPA does not exclude their 90 or 120 varieties. It's just that this beer&mdashbold, important, and impressive&mdashis a lesson in brewing. Continuously hopping the beer for 60 minutes produces an explosion of flavors and a surprising crispness. Try it in a flight with the 90 and 120 for a full education.
These Brooklyn brewers have been cranking out powerful IPAs since 2004. Bengali, which started as a homebrew, has a vibrant orange color (hence the name) and a bite of hops that chomps down and won't let go. This is going to sound strange, but it pairs exceptionally well with cheddar popcorn.
This Cincinnati brewery's offering is refreshingly honest. It's an East Coast-style IPA, so expect a ton of pineapple, mango, and apple-esque flavors, along with a tongue-tingling effervescence.
Kentucky can do more than bourbon. This IPA is proof. It's a double, so the ABV sits at 8%, but you have to love the no-bullshit approach. It's just powerfully hoppy, with heft, and unapologetic about it all.
Grassy, yet sweet. Spicy, yet smooth. Wild, yet balanced. This Illinois-based brewer offers an excellent representation of all the things a great IPA can be&mdashin one beer.
This was the now-legendary Asheville, NC, brewery's first IPA. It's a titan of the category&mdashbright, not bitter&mdashand exceptionally easy-drinking, even at 7.3% ABV.
There's haze in here, but make no mistake, this is a West Coast style IPA at heart. Mosaic and Denali hops combine to form a beer that's shot through with orange and grapefruit flavors, yet surprisingly floral on the nose.

Most Innovative: Enemigo 89 Añejo Cristalino
Looking for something unique? This añejo cristalino tequila is just the ticket. The spirit ages for over a year in new American oak but is then filtered through Enemigo’s three-phase Carbon-Cellulose system, which removes pigment from the spirit. The resulting beverage is smooth, silky and extremely easy to drink. The tequila gets its name from the 89 attempts it took to craft this innovative expression of agave. We recommend sipping this one solo.
