Ice cream socials remind me of the last day of school. On more than one occasion, my elementary school class would celebrate the end of the year with scoops of vanilla and chocolate ice cream topped with a pillow of whipped cream and dotted with rainbow sprinkles. It was always such a special treat. The bad news? Not many people throw ice cream socials now that we’re all grown up. The good news? You can change that with these fun, adult ideas for throwing your very own ice cream social at home. So grab a spoon and get ready for a carefree summer celebration!

Invitations: An ice cream social is a great excuse to find fun, whimsical invitations to send to your friends. I love this one from Paperless Post and this one from Punchbowl. Make sure to send your invites at least two weeks in advance (even earlier is better). Schedules fill up quickly and you want to give your guests plenty of advance notice.

Create a Menu: This is the fun part. Decide on what kind of ice cream you will serve and the toppings to make available. Keeping the ice cream flavors basic helps create a nice base for fun toppings, so stick with flavors like vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry. Then, ask your guests to bring toppings like salted caramel, strawberries with balsamic syrup, praline pecans, crushed chocolate-covered pretzels, Baileys Irish Cream, chocolate-covered espresso beans, popcorn… the list of possibilities is endless. And of course, you’ll need sprinkles, chocolate sauce, and fresh whipped cream. Another nice treat is to have freshly brewed strong coffee or espresso so guests can create their own version of affogato.

Create a Station: Set up a station where you can keep pints of ice cream, bowls of toppings, and napkins, spoons, straws, and cups for serving. Make sure the place you choose is easily accessible and won’t create too much of a traffic jam as your guests stand in line to make their ice cream creations. Decorate the station with a pretty garland, some balloons, or a chalkboard with the ice cream and toppings written artfully for display.

As I'm sure you all know by now, Josh & I got married 4 weeks ago. It was the most magical day and I can't WAIT to share some of the photos with you when we get them back from the photographer!

We did a lot of DIY and had everything that we loved. Including making our own ice cream sundae bar!

About a year and a half before the wedding I thought it would be a great idea to have an ice cream sundae bar for dessert. 6 months later I went to a friends wedding and they had one! It was a done deal. summer wedding dessert perfection.

It couldn't be easier to set up and is so easily customised. We kept it super simple - vanilla ice cream, sprinkles, chocolate chips, marshmallows & chocolate sauce, but you could choose your favourite flavour ice cream and any toppings you like. If I was doing this again I would pick a few different sauces (heeeey salted caramel) but I had just a few (ha!) other things to organise for the wedding so chocolate it was. Aaaand 1kg of sprinkles that we are still working our way through, 1 sprinkles slice & bake cookie at a time!

We pre scooped the ice cream and put the scoops back in the freezer until we needed them which was a great decision. You could even scoop them into the bowl you are going to serve them in so that you can just pull it out and have it ready to go. We put the toppings in preserving jars and I bought little plastic squeezy bottles for about $1.50 each from a party store. The paper cups also came from there.

You could even colour theme it - pink cups & lollies for a princess party, chocolate money for a pirate party, green & red M&M's for Christmas. you catch my drift. ice cream sundae bars for any occasion!

Ice Cream Social Homecoming Party with Hudsonville

I am home! I missed my friends terribly while I was traveling around the world for 101 days, and seeing them was the first thing that I wanted to do when I got home, so I decided to host an ice cream social!

Charles had never been to an ice cream social so I had to explain the concept to him. You invite your friends and gather your favorite ice cream and toppings and let everyone make their own cones or sundaes. Growing up in Maine, my school had ice cream socials once a year. It was a no-fuss way for the school to put on an event where parents and kids could get to know each other. I hadn’t been to an ice cream social since I was a kid, but it is such a fun party idea! I want to start hosting them regularly.

I love ice cream socials because they are a hassle-free way to host a party. I didn’t need to cook anything! I just needed to go to the grocery store and pick up ice cream and toppings. It was so easy, the total preparation was just minutes, I just needed to set everything out on my counter.

The ice cream social was a blast! What could be more fun than eating ice cream with friends? I can’t believe I didn’t think of this sooner, ice cream is the perfect summertime treat and a great way to cool down on a hot day. An ice cream social is the perfect summertime party. Ice cream is universally loved, and a great way to bring people together to have the Sweetest Summer Ever!

Here are my tips for hosting an ice cream social:

Buy enough ice cream. I bought pints because I wanted to serve several flavors and I was only hosting six guests. If you are expecting a larger crowd, get tubs instead. Hudsonville is available in both pints and 48 ounce tubs – you can mix and match if you want! Consider dietary restrictions and food allergies. Luckily, my friends are able to eat nuts and dairy, but you might want to get a pint of Dairy Free Ice Cream (Hudsonville makes it in flavors like Caramel Cookie Dough, S’mores, and Cherry Fudge) in addition to some nut-free flavors.

Pick a variety of ice cream flavors. You need the vanilla and chocolate, so I got Hudsonville’s Creamery Blend Vanilla (my favorite rich creamy vanilla) and their classic Chocolate. I also got Seaside Caramel and Traverse City Cherry Fudge. My friend Libb wanted to taste the Traverse City Cherry Fudge so she took a little spoonful… and went back for two more scoops. It’s just that good. I think that including chocolate, vanilla, caramel, and something fruity covers most people’s go-to ice creams.

Buy extra vanilla. It goes with everything making it the perfect base for an ice cream sundae!

Use paper bowls for easy cleanup.

If you want to make things really easy, you can ask your friends to bring their favorite ice cream topping.

Pick a variety of toppings. I think that chocolate and caramel sauce are essentials. So are sprinkles and whipped cream. Add some fruit – I picked strawberries, cherries, and raspberries. And then some nuts and candy. I arranged everything in glass bowls.

Get creative! The best thing about an ice cream social is that there are no rules. Add all the toppings or none at all. Make exactly what you want and enjoy every bite.

The online ice cream celebration, adapted for the coronavirus pandemic, will feature five area sweet-treat experts performing live demonstrations, sharing recipes and dishing out tips. The event is being held via Zoom at 6 p.m. on Aug. 23.

A Virtual Ice Cream Social is presented by Good Taste! Pittsburgh, a producer of culinary shows and sponsored by Isaly&rsquos LLC, a true Pittsburgh tradition in ice cream.

Tickets are $15 and include a &ldquoWe Got The Scoop Passport&rdquo with free and special offers from local ice cream merchants.

Jessica Iacullo, author of the Pittsburgh blog &ldquoHungry Grl, Big City,&rdquo will host the festival.

&ldquoThere&rsquos a reason we all scream for ice cream,&rdquo said the show&rsquos producer Dee Weinberg in a statement. &ldquoWe&rsquoll give you the scoop, then top it off with lots of demos, new ideas and fun!&rdquo

Presenters include: Jennifer Gregg, from Isaly&rsquos, demonstrating how to make Klondikes at home Anna Crucitt, from Mercurio&rsquos Pizza and Gelato, dishing on all things gelato Kaden Young from NatuRoll Creamery, showing the international technique of creating rolled ice cream Sharon Caroll from Oakmont Olive Oil, creating unconventional toppings and Amanda Iwaniec from Carnegie Science Center, detailing the science behind ice cream.

Gregg is director of digital marketing and events for Isaly&rsquos. She discussed her presentation about the Klondikes inside the Kidsburgh section at the Senator John Heinz History Center in the Strip District on Monday. Klondikes are now owned by Unilever, based in London.

The space in Kidsburgh includes a counter where children can serve up ice cream, old photos of Isaly&rsquos, including the shop along the Boulevard of the Allies in Oakland and a full-scale fiberglass cow.

&ldquoWe will show people how to harden the chocolate over the Whitehouse Cherry ice cream,&rdquo said Gregg. &ldquo We also plan to make boozy milkshakes and share all the recipes.&rdquo She said one of the favorite parts of her job is when someone sees the name on her apron and shares their story of Isaly&rsquos.

Her husband, Herb Gregg, is an Isaly&rsquos account manager. He said the ice cream is available at Giant Eagle, Kuhn&rsquos and Shop &lsquon Save. Flavors are Whitehouse Cherry, Chocolate, Vanilla, Mint Chocolate Chip, Maricopa (vanilla with butterscotch) and the newest one &mdash Toasted Almond Fudge.

&ldquoThey tell us, &lsquoI remember Isaly&rsquos, and this ice cream tastes just like it did when I was a kid,&rsquo &rdquo Jennifer Gregg said. &ldquoIt is a part of history and it is about childhood memories, because there was one on every corner. People went there for a skyscraper ice cream cone or some chipped ham or a Klondike. This is a great way to have a food event, and to have it safely, and we know everyone loves ice cream.&rdquo
